NEWFEED Partners at the 75th EAAP Annual Meeting
NEWFEED was proudly represented by two key partners, the University of Western Macedonia (UOWM) and the Hellenic Agricultural Organization ELGO-DIMITRA, at the 75th Annual Meeting of the European Association for Animal Production (EAAP), held in Florence from September 1st to 5th, 2024. This prestigious event brought together leading experts and researchers in the field of animal science from across Europe.
UOWM Team Participates
The UOWM team highlighted key findings from the NEWFEED project, focusing on the dietary supplementation of lactating ewes’ diets with orange peels (Case study 1), investigating its potential to improve the quality of dairy products, specifically yoghurt.
Associate Professor Eleni Kasapidou, representing UOWM, presented two insightful posters during the event. The first, titled “Dietary supplementation of orange peel ingredient in lactating ewes: effect on yoghurt physicochemical characteristics” showcased the influence of orange peel supplementation on various physicochemical properties such as colour, texture, syneresis and viscosity. The second poster entitled, “Dietary supplementation of orange peel ingredient in lactating ewes: effect on yoghurt sensory characteristics”, demonstrated how these dietary changes impacted sensory attributes, including colour, taste, aroma, texture and overall consumer acceptability.
ELGO-DIMITRA’s Research Presentation
The Institute of Animal Science at the Hellenic Agricultural Organization ELGO-DIMITRA made a significant impact with an oral presentation led by Maria-Anastasia Karatzia. This presentation was based on the results from the feed trail in Case Study 2 on the sssessment of the use of orange peel from orange juice industry to produce an improved feed ingredient for ruminants (dairy sheep), which investigated the Utilization of orange peels as a high value secondary feedstuff for dairy sheep.
Presented during Session 90 on Nutrition and Feeding in the Circular Economy, the study explored the transformation of orange peels, a byproduct of the orange juice industry, into a valuable feed ingredient for ruminants and the effect of nutrition on rumen methanogenic bacteria population.
