NEWFEED Project’s Participation in the 11th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Rhodes, Greece 2024
We are delighted to announce that the NEWFEED project was prominently featured at the 11th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management, held in Rhodes, Greece from June 19-22, 2024. Our partners actively contributed to various sessions, showcasing the innovative research and significant results of the NEWFEED project.
CASE STUDY 1 – AZTI
David San Martín Errea from AZTI presented a comprehensive overview of the NEWFEED project, highlighting the validation of grape stem-based ingredients in animal feeding trials (Find the presentation here). Additionally, Jone Ibarruri presented the optimization of the grape stem valorization process to produce a sugar-rich liquor and functional animal feed for dairy sheep and cattle. These presentations underscored the project’s commitment to sustainable feed solutions and circular economy practices. (Find the presentation here).

CASE SRUDY 2 – NTUA
The NTUA team participated in the poster session, presenting the results of Case Study 2 on the use of orange peels as a secondary feedstuff for dairy sheep. The poster, prepared in collaboration with ELGO-DIMITRA and UOWM partners, was titled “Orange peels as a secondary feedstuff for dairy sheep.” The team highlighted that the proposed valorization process offers a sustainable option for dairy sheep farming, contributing to reduced waste and enhanced feed efficiency. CASE STUDY 3 – HUSD
The HUSD, SDF, and ISIS partners presented their findings in the “Waste Valorisation I” session. The presentation, titled “The Impact of Broiler Feed on Growth and Performance by Valorization of Olive Cake as By-product in the Ration,” discussed the validation of valorization and feeding strategies using olive cake in broiler feed (Case Study 3). The results demonstrated the positive impact of using olive cake by-products, showcasing a viable and sustainable alternative for poultry feed. (Find the presentation here).

CASE STUDY 3 – METU
METU partners shared their life cycle assessment (LCA) of Case Study 3 in the session on “Tools in the field of waste management”. Their presentation, titled “Life Cycle Assessment of Valorizing Olive Cake Waste in Animal Feed Production,” provided a detailed analysis of the environmental benefits of using olive cake in poultry livestock. The findings emphasized the sustainability of the proposed valorization process, offering a promising solution for the poultry sector. (Find the presentation here).

The conference provided a valuable platform for the NEWFEED project partners to disseminate their research findings, engage with stakeholders, and explore collaborative opportunities. The diverse range of presentations highlighted the project’s multifaceted approach to waste valorization and its potential to revolutionize animal feed production.
