Strengthening Collaboration: NEWFEED & EXCEL4MED
On 7th February 2025 , the NEWFEED and EXCEL4MED projects came together for an insightful networking webinar, fostering knowledge exchange on circular economy strategies and sustainable food production.
NEWFEED Presentation
David San Martin, coordinator of NEWFEED, introduced the project and showcased three key videos highlighting its main case studies:
- Grape Stems for Ruminants – Evaluating their use in dairy cattle feed.
- Orange Peels for Ruminants – Studying their impact on sheep nutrition.
- Olive Cake for Poultry – Testing its potential as an alternative poultry feed ingredient.
The discussion explored NEWFEED’s work in optimizing food by-products for animal feed, assessing their environmental and economic impact, and engaging stakeholders for industry feedback.
EXCEL4MED’s Vision
Following a Q&A session, EXCEL4MED representatives presented their project, which focuses on developing an innovation ecosystem for sustainable food processing in the Mediterranean. They highlighted their approach to utilizing green technologies—such as electrochemical treatments—to extract valuable bioactive compounds from pomegranate and citrus by-products.
Key Takeaways
The webinar facilitated productive discussions on:
- Potential synergies between the two projects in food waste valorization.
- Methods for improving knowledge transfer between academia and industry.
- Opportunities for future collaboration in sustainable food innovation.
With both projects sharing a commitment to circular economy principles, this webinar marked a step toward stronger partnerships in Mediterranean agri-food sustainability.
