Highlights from the Egyptian Demonstration Workshop: Addressing Challenges in Chicken Farming and Feed Costs with Sustainable Solutions
On October 9th, 2024, the Egyptian Demonstration Workshop for the NEWFEED Project was held at SEKEM Farm in Belbes, Sharkeya, Egypt, organized in collaboration with Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development. The workshop brought together over twenty stakeholders from the feed industry, local stakeholders, and the Newfeed consortium, focusing on sustainable feed solutions for Egypt’s chicken farming sector.
The event aimed to tackle two pressing issues in Egyptian poultry farming: high costs of raw materials and the limited availability of affordable, high-quality feedstuffs. Attendees engaged in discussions on strategies to incorporate agricultural by-products into poultry feed, a solution that promises not only economic benefits but also supports the goals of circular economy and resource efficiency.
Workshop Highlights
The workshop offered valuable insights into key areas relevant to Egypt’s chicken farming industry, including:
- Addressing the Cost and Quality of Feedstuffs: Rising costs and declining quality of feedstuffs pose significant challenges for the poultry sector. Participants discussed the potential of food industry by-products, which can be repurposed as secondary feed ingredients, making poultry farming more affordable and sustainable.
- Promoting Sustainable Feed Alternatives: Using agri-food industry by-products in animal feed was showcased as a leading solution to rising raw material costs. By utilizing these resources, the industry can reduce dependency on traditional feed inputs and minimize waste, aligning with circular economy practices.
- On-site Demonstrations: Participants observed firsthand how food industry by-products, such as olive cake, can be processed and integrated into poultry diets as a secondary feed ingredient. This demonstration illustrated the practical steps and benefits of using fermented olive cake as a cost-effective, nutrient-rich feed supplement.
The Egyptian Demonstration Workshop exemplified the project’s commitment to developing sustainable feed solutions through transnational knowledge-sharing and innovation. The next workshop, scheduled for 2025 in Spain, will continue building on these initiatives, further advancing the NEWFEED Project’s mission to support sustainable agricultural practices across the Mediterranean region.
