NewFeed Project’s Final Meeting in Bilbao: A Milestone Towards Completion
The NewFeed project held its final meeting in Bilbao, Spain, to the facilities of AZTI, marking a significant milestone as the partners are preparing for its completion in June 2025. This crucial gathering brought together project partners to align on final deliverables and ensure a smooth closure of the project.
The first day of the meeting commenced with a warm welcome to all attendees, followed by an introduction from the project coordinator, David San Martin (AZTI). The agenda featured key discussions on alternative feed value chains, dissemination strategies, and demonstration workshops.
The first session focused on Task 1.3 – Dissemination & Consumer Awareness & Task 1.4 – Demonstration Workshops, presented from SEVT, which explored strategies to increase awareness of sustainable feed solutions and the dissemination of Newfeed results.
The afternoon sessions focused on the validation of valorization and feeding strategies at pilot scale. Partners from AZTI and NEIKER presented Task 3.1 – Case Study 1, which investigated the use of grape stem-based ingredients for dairy sheep and cattle. This was followed by the presentation from the Greek partners, NTUA – HAO Demeter and UOWM regarding Task 3.2 – Case Study 2, centered on the utilization of orange peel-based ingredients for dairy sheep. Finally, HUSD presented Task 3.3 – Case Study 3, focusing on olive cake-based ingredients for poultry, particularly broiler chickens.
Beyond formal sessions, the first day included a guided tour of Bilbao, organized by AZTI partners. Participants had the opportunity to explore the city’s vibrant culture and architecture, fostering deeper collaboration in an informal setting. The day concluded with a social dinner, reinforcing networking among partners.
The second day delved into sustainability assessment, with detailed presentations on Life Cycle Assessment, Life Cycle Costing, and social assessment led by partners from METU and SEVT. METU presented Task 4.1 – Life Cycle Assessment, followed by Task 4.2 – Life Cycle Costing. SEVT then led Task 4.3 – Social Assessment, providing insight into the value chains situation and the impact of the NewFeed project.
AZTI partners presented Task 5.1 – Legal and Regulatory Issues, Task 5.2 – Dissemination and Exploitation Plan of the Projects’ Results and finally, Task 5.3 – Continuation Strategy After the End of the Project.
To complement discussions, participants visited AZTI’s facilities, where the first case study on grape stem-based ingredients for dairy sheep and cattle was conducted. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into the practical applications of the project’s research.
To wrap up the meeting on a high note, the final day featured a group excursion to the beautiful coastal city of San Sebastián. This trip allowed attendees to reflect on the achievements of the NewFeed project while enjoying the rich culinary and scenic offerings of the region.
